Chapter Nine

Bridget

Our first official date was even better than the unofficial one. All of the negativity had been swept clean and we had a fresh start, and while my head, my heart, and my hormones were all still at odds, I found that I was happy.

Together in the front seat of his car, I was more comfortable than ever. After our kiss at the business dinner, most of my inhibitions left. My heart, if not yet my body, was slowly opening to the idea of him. I loved Zane in a preternatural way, that was only starting to seep into reality. His hand brushed my thigh changing gears, and the erotic jolt sent my dragon flapping.

“It’s not like flying, is it?” he asked absently as he sped down the road, “Some people say it is if you drive fast enough, but it’s never felt like it to me.”

“Not really, no, kind of like apples and oranges though. One’s natural, the other mechanical.”

“True,” Zane agreed, “and airplanes are mechanical, and surprisingly similar, at least in terms of feeling. One is still sitting, letting engines do all the work. So that doesn’t really feel the same as our way of flying, either.”

“Doesn’t it get boring?”

“It can, that’s why there are car radios and in-flight movies.”

“There are movies?”

“You’ve never been on a plane, have you?”

There was no mockery in his tone, the question was sincere. Probing my life and experience, drilling for information on the real me. Not just the one everyone thought they could see.

“No, never, maybe I should.”

“Personally I recommend it. First class, though, of course, for the leg room,” he grinned.

I laughed and nodded in agreement.

“But honestly, I kind of like traveling like a mortal, seeing it from their perspective. They really are quite inventive, you know. We can’t see it because flying is something we just do; it is difficult to appreciate what you’ve always had. When mortals wanted to fly, they had to work at it and build machines.”

My teeth almost hurting from his sweetness, I considered his sage words, helping me see mortals in a whole new light. I used to think they were just like us, only less so, but they really were their own special thing. I’d always liked Alicia, but was getting insight into what Titus truly saw in her, his newfound mushiness seeming a lot less random and chaotic.

“Which form do you prefer, dragon or human?” I asked suddenly.

He lifted his eyebrows. “That’s a big question.”

“Sorry, you’re right, I shouldn’t have -”

“No, no, it’s fine, I just need some time to think. It is a big question and doesn’t have an easy answer. I suppose on balance I prefer my human form. What about you?”

“Dragon, hands down,” I replied without missing a beat.

“Shouldn’t that be claws down?”

I snorted. “True. So, why do you prefer human form?”

“Don’t get me wrong, they both have their advantages, but I suppose there is one thing that puts human over dragon, if only by a little.”

“What’s that?” I asked, curiosity piqued.
